They worked the entire season and were away for months at a time. He didn't cut the trees himself, but he did help floating the logs down the river. Mabel did the cooking for the crew. Family history claims that he owned the "Quarters" hotel in Lake Placid with his brother until it burned down in about 1897. It had 20 bedrooms, a bar, and a restaurant. However, MacKenzie claims: "There is no evidence that Legrand Hathaway ever lived in Lake Placid, and certainly there was never a hotel here known as 'Quarters'. There was, however, a hotel on what became the Olympic speed skating oval. It was built about 1900 by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Green and was always known as "Hotel Albert" and named for their son Albert, who died young. The hotel was soon acquired by the Hennessey family, who owned it until it was torn down in 1930 when the speed skating oval was being built for the 1932 Olympics." bullet William M. Hathaway was born on 17 Feb 1833. He served in the military on 1 Jul 1863 in Gettysburg, VA. "William Hathaway was a corporal in the U.S. cavalry. He fought at the battle of Gettysburg on the 1st day - July 1, 1863 in Chambursburg. Corporal William Hathaway was fighting in Company G, 9th New York Regament [sic], 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, Cavalry Corps, in the Army of the Potomac. One day while he was fighting, his horse was shot out from umder him by the South. The bullet missed him by about 5 inches, and put a bullet hole in the saddle. Instead of borrowing someone else's horse, he had to take the saddle off, walk all the way back to where they store the extra horses, then pick out the right color. He couldn't pick just any horse, because companies are identified by the color of their horses. Company G had dark bays. After he found the right color, he had to ride back to his position. The saddle is now in a museum in the Adirondacks." He died on 24 Nov 1908. He was a farmer in Jay, Essex Co, NY. "William M. Hathaway was proud of his large farm, known as Old Hathaway Homestead, which was originally his Uncle Petty's. He had many horses, pastures of sheep, which he grazed on a mountain lot.
